Kasumba Eriabu founded the mall along with his family, who live in the diaspora and transformed a once swampy area into the first shopping mall in the area. Eriabu Kasumba was married to Margaret Lillan Kasumba and had nine children together. He was one of the first prominent businessmen to own a shop on Kampala Road and named it Kabale Busega Stores Ltd. When he was president in the 1960s, the former president Yusuf Lule encouraged and supported Africans to join businesses to compete with the Asians.
